Aircon Making Noise?
Here's the Cause — and the Fix

Rattling usually means a loose panel or blower debris — fixed during the service visit. Humming or grinding points to the fan motor or compressor. We diagnose on-site and tell you exactly what it is before touching anything.

Common Causes

Why is your aircon making noise?

The type of noise tells you a lot about the cause. Here's what each sound usually means — and what it takes to fix it.

Loose front panel or casing (rattling)
The most common cause of aircon rattling. The front panel clips onto the indoor unit — over time, the clips loosen and the panel vibrates when the fan runs at certain speeds. This is usually most noticeable at high fan settings. Tightening or re-clipping the panel fixes it during the service visit. No parts required.
Fix: Tighten casing — during service
Debris in the blower wheel (scraping or vibrating)
Dust can compact into chunks on the blower wheel blades, creating an imbalance that causes vibration or a rhythmic scraping sound. Occasionally a small object — a hair clip, a piece of debris that fell into the unit — gets lodged in the blower and causes a louder scraping noise. Cleaning the blower resolves it.
Fix: Blower clean — during service
Fan motor bearing wear (humming or grinding)
The indoor fan motor has bearings that wear out over time — usually after 5–8 years of use. As the bearing degrades, it produces a steady hum or grinding sound that gets gradually louder. It won't fix itself and will eventually seize, stopping airflow completely. We'll diagnose on-site and quote a motor replacement if needed.
Fix: Fan motor replacement — quoted on-site
Compressor vibration or fault (loud hum from outdoor)
A loud hum, rattling, or banging from the outdoor unit usually points to the compressor. The compressor can vibrate loudly if its rubber mounting pads are worn, or if it's developing a fault. Compressor faults are more common in older units (8+ years). We'll diagnose on-site and advise whether a repair or new unit makes more economic sense.
Fix: Compressor repair or replacement — quoted on-site

How AFIX diagnoses and fixes a noisy aircon

We work through the causes in order — starting with the most common and easiest to fix. You'll know what's wrong before we start any repair.

1

Listen and locate the noise

We run the unit at different fan speeds to identify where the noise is coming from — casing, blower, indoor fan motor, or outdoor compressor. Different sounds point to different causes.

2

Check the front panel and casing

We check all panel clips and the casing for looseness. If the panel is rattling, we re-clip or tighten it on the spot. This resolves a large proportion of noise complaints in a few minutes.

3

Inspect and clean the blower wheel

We open the unit and inspect the blower wheel for debris buildup or lodged objects. If that's the cause, we clean it during the service visit. Heavy buildup is visible — we photograph it before and after.

4

Test the fan motor

If the noise is a hum or grind rather than a rattle, we test the indoor fan motor. We'll tell you if the bearing is worn and whether a replacement motor is cost-effective versus the age of the unit.

5

Check the outdoor unit compressor

If the noise comes from outside, we inspect the compressor and mounting pads. Loose mountings can be tightened. Compressor faults are quoted separately — we'll give you a clear recommendation before any work proceeds.

Why is my aircon making a rattling noise?+
Rattling is most commonly caused by a loose front panel or side casing that vibrates when the fan runs. It can also be debris caught in the blower wheel. Both are typically fixed during a standard service visit — we tighten the casing and clear the blower.
Why is my aircon making a humming or grinding noise?+
A humming or grinding noise usually points to the fan motor. As the motor bearing wears out, it produces a steady hum or grinding sound that gets louder over time. If the noise comes from the outdoor unit, it may be the compressor. We diagnose on-site and give you a clear repair or replacement recommendation.
Can a noisy aircon be fixed during a service visit?+
If the cause is a loose panel or debris in the blower — yes, this is fixed as part of the standard service. If the cause is a worn fan motor or compressor fault, that requires a separate repair quote after on-site diagnosis. We'll tell you which applies before starting work.
How much does it cost to fix a noisy aircon?+
A standard service (which covers loose panel and blower debris) costs $50 for 1 unit, $30/unit for 2, $25/unit for 3+. If the fan motor needs replacing, we'll quote separately after diagnosis. No call-out fee.
Is a noisy aircon dangerous?+
A rattling panel isn't dangerous — just annoying. A grinding or humming motor is more serious: a failing motor bearing can seize and stop the fan completely, causing the coil to freeze or the unit to overheat. If you hear grinding, have it checked sooner rather than later.
My aircon makes noise only at startup — is that normal?+
A brief click or hum when starting up is normal — that's the compressor kicking in. A rattle that only happens for the first minute usually points to a loose panel that vibrates until the airflow stabilises. If it's persistent or gets louder over time, get it checked.
